Grand Central’s Holiday Fair !
Posted on November 16th, 2010 by Nicole BeauchampFor many years, when I worked in Midtown Manhattan Grand Central was literally and figuratively my hub.Every day I made my way to offices at various buildings in the area -two that still stand out in my memory are the Lincoln Building, which is now One Grand Central Place and the Helmsley Building (such lovely holiday decorations, and often even musicians in the lobby !) That said, while most of the year it could at times feel overwhelming-especially if I was venturing out of Manhattan (shocking,I know) ,racing to catch the Metro-North,like clockwork every year just before Thanksgiving ,my feelings changed.
I love the light shows, and especially the Grand Central Terminal Holiday Fair. Grand Central is one of my favorite buildings in all of Manhattan, but add the fair and I will always find a way to pass thru ! The show opened on Monday, with the Rockette’s cutting the ribbon.
This year there are about 76 vendors.A great place to get unique gifts for those very special people !
The fair is open seven days a week, except for Thanksgiving Day. For more information head to GrandCentralTerminal.com

As Curbed noted yesterday, this seems to be the week to break up with NYC. Sorry, but we just won’t stand for that—and not just because we won’t have anything left to write about, or because it will wipe out the equity in our co-op. So why should you stay in New York? We’ll tell you:
- It’s not L.A.
- It’s fun to shock your Kansas relatives with how much you pay for indoor parking.
- Alternatively, you can book all of your ZipCars in the fancy garage behind the Dakota and not even have to tip the attendants at Christmas.
- Now that bed bugs have made movies, opera, shopping and dating out of the question, it’s actually cheaper to live here than in Spokane.
- Small apartments are an advantage if you do get bed bugs.
- Moreover, since you work 80 hours a week, chances are your 450-square-foot studio doesn’t bother you so much.
- You don’t have to overconsume alcohol at home, as the taxi is your designated driver.
- Menupages has 9,165 menus for New York City, and at least half of them deliver
- You can own a dog without ever actually walking it, and no one will even think you’re weird. (You can also walk your cat, and no one will act like you’re weird.)
- Where else can you greet someone like a friend on a subway platform, then realize it’s the guy across the airshaft who does nude Taekwondo on Thursdays, Sundays and alternate Mondays?

Apples, oranges, blackberries, and droids-doesn’t all of this sound like a futuristic fruit salad? And as if that isn’t confusing enough-everyone is talking about Twitter, Facebook, blogging and SEO -which really sounds like cereal (note to self, don’t write when hungry…) Are you curious, or possibly more likely, totally confused by what to do and how to use any of these tools in your business? Wary of people peddling their wares, promising to make things work; catapult you to the top of search engines-for a (often hefty and absurd) price? Bring your confusion to RE Bar Camp Rye! What is a bar camp you ask? It is an unconference, an event driven by YOU the attendee, low cost (in this case FREE thanks to our wonderful sponsors and volunteers-full disclosure I am one of the latter). It’s a great way to wet your palette, jam packed with knowledge, from people just like you, other real estate professionals, from the trenches. Its not about sitting in a room having fruit thrown at you, please don’t throw fruit at us, but its about planting seeds, sharing knowledge ,starting and furthering relationships , taking the online offline, so that we may do what we do best even better, serve our clients ! Have something you want to discuss or present on that you are knowledgeable about-doesn’t have to be social media related-DO come and participate too, or if you’re a little shy-send us suggestions too. Extra special bonus, we in the NYC are lucky to now be home to one of the co-founders of the Tech Savvy Agent blog, which recently was recognized as most innovative blog by Inman News. Chris Smith will be at REBC Rye!!!! Here is a prime opportunity to connect and engage directly, ask questions, learn what may work for you! Become a tech savvy agent, so you can learn what could work or not for you, and become an informed consumer, learn what is worth investing your time (and money) into or not. And, by the way, if you don’t believe in the power of the fruit salad (if its for you, or that it works for anyone) WHEN (not if) you come to REBC Rye, be sure an introduce yourself to me and I will be glad to tell you some of the awesome things I’ve learned, people I have met, and yes, even business too! At the end of the day, it’s not about social media, it’s about integrating tools to improve your business, that hasn’t changed-it’s just that now we have to “plug in” occasionally… Don’t miss this event, register at www.rebarcamprye.com, connect and engage onhttp://facebook.com/rebcrye (and for those of you tweeting, the event hashtag is #rebcrye-if you don’t know what that is,come ,and find out !) Follow me there ! The event is on Saturday September 11th from 8:30 to 4:30 in Rye, NY at the Hilton. Nikki Beauchamp is on the planning committee for REBC Rye, an agent at Warburg Realty in NYC„ blogs on the Warburg Realty blog, and atYourNYCRealEstateResource.com …and of course on twitter and facebook!

What is a barcamp?
From the www.rebarcamp.com website:
The concept for RE Bar Camp came from a technology BarCamp event held in San Francisco. Wikipedia defines a barcamp a: An international network for user generated conferences-open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants.
RE BarCamp is a BarCamp for Real Estate-what that means-the event is not structured like a typical planned conference. Every session isn’t planned out in advance. No one is paid to deliver a session. Anyone can deliver a session, and attendees are strongly encouraged to participate.
Anyone can lead a session, anyone can participate-or you can feel free to suggest topics that you maybe want to learn more about. It is very much what YOU make of it.
REBarCamp events are run completely by unpaid volunteers; they are typically free because of the support of sponsors.
This is NOT a for profit venture, it is very much a labor of love-to provide a forum where you can comfortably attend, network, learn, grow and participate.
Why 9/11 ?
Having an event on this day was not by design. The New York State Association of Realtors ® has their Fall Business Meetings beginning on September 12th .It was suggested at the Winter Business Meeting that a RE Bar Camp be held on the 11th and they are a sponsor, providing the venue at the Rye Town Hilton.
For all of us ,as a nation collectively ,9/11 is a somber day, a day of remembrance of a most horrific series of terrorists acts that morning.
For those of us in the NYC metropolitan area, our experience of the events of that day, isn’t how we saw it on TV or read about it-it’s how we LIVED it, and how we still live it. Many of us had deeply personal ties and suffered losses of family, friends, colleagues and other loved ones.
The decision to incorporate the obvious significance of the date into the logo was meant in deference and honor to the very acute meaning of the day, and its losses in our area. It was not meant to defame ,or attempt to profit in any way shape or form. Because of the date of the BarCamp, the planning committee decided that there will be a philanthropic component to it-and we are in the process of narrowing down a 9/11 related charity to which a donation will be made (after covering expenses for event, funds exceeding will be donated ).
We hope that you will join us on Saturday September 11th 2010 for RE Bar Camp in Rye, NY. For more information or to RSVP go to www.rebarcamprye.com. Follow us on Twitter @REBCRYE .Event hashtag #REBCRYE and join our facebook page at http://facebook.com/rebcrye .

The heat rises ,and everyone in the city starts to enjoy many of our outdoor summer traditions. High on my list personally, are the annual concerts by the Philharmonic in the park ,as well as the Met Opera recital series. And last year-they added Summer in HD where they broadcast, for free, the HD versions of some of the operas right at Lincoln Center. Bringing the arts to a wider audience.
So here are tips for this week !
Tonight ! The Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital Series begins for this year.At 8p, at summer stage, and then on to the boroughs, and all of these subsequent performances are at 7p. On Thursday July 15th in Crotona Park in Queens, on July 20th at Brooklyn Bridge Park (in Brooklyn) , July 22nd Tappan Park on Staten Island ,July 27th Queens Bridge Park (in Queens) and ending on Jul
New York Philharmonic’s Concerts in the Park- all five boroughs-but this year, the first two nights are at Central Park’s famed Great Lawn. Grab a blanket, pack a picnic dinner and head out to hear one of the world’s best orchestras perform.
Tuesday and Wednesday night at 8P on the Great Lawn-make a night of it with friends !
Thursday and Friday nights, are at Cunningham Park in Queens, and Prospect Park in Brooklyn ,respectively. Many of the evenings end with fireworks too.And hopefully the weather will be fabulous (I have many times gotten caught in a downpour-but what fun it was ,rain or not !)
For those who love brass and percussion ensembles- on Saturday 7/17 and Monday 7/19 the New York Philharmonic Brass and Percussion Ensemble will perform. Saturday is at the College of Staten Island/CUNY Center for Arts- it’s also free, but tickets are required-for more information call 718-982-2787. And Monday evening, the last evening in the series, is at Hostos Community College-also requiring tickets, and for more information call 718-518-4555.
As we roll closer to the end of August, look for a post on the HD opera screenings at Lincoln Center- I really enjoyed going last year, looking forward to it again !
Til the next time, always at your service.
